A parade of floats, lanterns and a sizzling performance by iconic rock band Dragon, created a celebratory atmosphere in Methven for the Mt Hutt ski field 50th anniversary Kick Off party.

Organisers estimate 2500 Mid Cantabrians turned out on Thursday night to join in the fun.

Mt Hutt Sales and Marketing Manager, Richie Owen said thirteen floats from local businesses and organisations took part in the parade, including one by ski field staff.

"It was a team effort. We had a big Mercedes truck with a snowmobile on it and a chair from the old quad lift."

Mt Hutt's 50th anniversary events take place throughout the week until August 24.
