Kruger blast leads Mid Canty to win

Mid Canterbury have made a promising start to the rep cricket season by regaining the Ron Biggar Memorial Trophy in Timaru.

Under new captain Angus Jemmett, Mid Canterbury claimed an 87-run win over rivals South Canterbury at Aorangi Oval.

Mid Canterbury were smashed in the corresponding fixture last year, rolled for 61 chasing the visitors 244/7 to hand the trophy over after a two year hold.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, things got off to an ominous start by losing Devon Flannery in the second over before the top order stepped up.

Opener Sam Field made 39, Jemmet was looking solid before being run out for 46, and Toby Robinson scored his first fifty for Mid Canterbury before being trapped LBW on 55.

They put Mid Canterbury in a position to launch and Des Kruger didn’t falter, blasting 89 off 56 balls and was the last man out with Mid Canterbury putting 267 on the board.

For the hosts, Hamish Caird collected 6/44 from his 10 overs.

Mid Canterbury then had South Canterbury in early trouble at 9/3 in only the fourth over with Lachie Jemmett bowling two players and Jack Middleton finding an edge into the gloves of Will Southby.

South Canterbury fought before Ryan Richan made the breakthrough to make it 99/4.

The hosts then lost three wickets with the score on 114 – a further two for Richan -

Richan took the final wicket to finish with 4/34 and seal an 87-run win.

Lachie Jemmett also had 3/27 and Jack Middleton 2/18.

It was a promising start to the representative calendar with the opening Hawke Cup match against Southland in a fortnight.
