Tragedy met with generosity

Tragedy met with generosity

A couple whose house burnt down in a Christmas Day fire have shared their gratitude for an outpouring of community support.

Tenants Sharon Kennedy and John Pollock “lost everything” when their Mitcham rental property on Bebbingtons Road, caught ablaze on Wednesday.

Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) were alerted to the fire around 4.00pm, and extinguished it within two hours.

A Givealittle page created for the pair has raised over $1,200 at the time of reporting, support which daughter Annabel Littlejohn said “is not going unnoticed.”

“They both cannot get over how generous the community is.

“She lost her phone and everything in the house fire, so no way to thank you herself. But they are both very grateful.”

Food, clothes and household good donations have been piling up at Annabel’s place, which will help her mum and stepdad set up life again in a new home.

The pair are staying with Connor in Christchurch while they pull together a bond for a new rental property.

He said the community “has been amazing” and that they’ve accumulated almost everything the two need to set up in a new house.

"They have no insurance so this will be a very difficult time to get through,” he shared in an earlier post to the Givealittle page.

"It is definitely not what we needed on Christmas day at all, we know this time of year is tough for everyone.

Fenz spokesperson said a water tanker and a fire truck and crew from Ashburton attended the blaze, along with a crew from Lauriston.

The fire was "well involved" when they arrived and a motorhome was also on fire.

"It appears the roof had collapsed."

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
