Students help restore native bush
We’ve heard of reforesting projects out on reserves and on farms - but how about an industrial worksite?
Ashburton Contractors Limited (ACL) decided to plant a 100-metre stretch of dirt on the fence edge of their office and storage ground.
They enlisted the help of 33 year 10 and 11 students from Ashburton College to do so.
EnviroTech and marketing manager Aaron Gairns said it was a chance for students to get some work experience.
“This might be an industry the kids are really interested in pursuing.
“It’s about involving the community, rather than doing something for them.”
About 1800 native plants had been purchased from Southern Wood nurseries to cover the area., said Smithscape landscaper Dale Smith
“Fantastic for birds and bees, easy care, and what probably used to be here.
“Give it three to four years, and it’ll be chocca.”
Ashburton College head of agriculture Jackie Driver said student would be able to see the fruits of their labour in a few years.
“They’re gonna be able to drive past and say, ‘I did that’.
“I could teach them all the theory in the world, but until they come out and do stuff, they won’t truly learn.”
