Sharplin Falls track not damaged in quake

The Sharplin Falls Track was not damaged in last week's 6.0 magnitude earthquake close to Mt Somers.

Department of Conservation's (DOC's) Geraldine senior heritage and visitors ranger Murray Thomas said the Mount Somers Walkway Society closed the track as a precaution after the earthquake.

"The Tāhekura/Sharplin Falls Track reopened it the following day."

Thomas said DOC had not received any reports of earthquake damage to DOC assets in Mid Canterbury.

He said DOC had not inspected the historic Lake Emma Hut as it is a day shelter and not used as accommodation.

"Some other historic buildings in the area have been checked and did not show any signs of damage," he said.
