A 22-year-old Hinds farmer pleaded guilty to charges of assault, impeding breathing and circulation, and intentionally injuring his partner.

Jacob Dean Allan Shefford appeared via video link from prison before Judge Campbell Savage in the Ashburton District Court last week.

He faces three representative charges of assault, intentional injury, and strangulation from a family violence incident on August 30 last year.

Shefford also admitted possessing and consuming alcohol in breach of his supervision sentence.

“I let myself down there,” he said.

Judge Campbell convicted Shefford and remanded him in custody for sentencing on March 18.

The judge referred the case for a restorative justice meeting and called for a pre-sentence report and an alcohol and drug assessment.
