New mayor for Selwyn: Gliddon beats Broughton by 10,000 votes
Lydia Gliddon says she is "deeply honoured" to be the new mayor of Selwyn after beating out incumbent Sam Broughton by over 10,000 votes.
Progress results show Gliddon has received 15,497 votes compared to Broughton's 4,156, who was seeking a fourth term as mayor.
Brad Mannering has 1,450.
In a social media post Gliddon said she was "deeply honoured" to be elected as mayor.
"Thank you for the trust and confidence you’ve placed in me and to everyone who took the time to vote, volunteer, or start a conversation about the future of our district.
"The real work begins now. We will continue building a Selwyn that’s connected, thriving, and prepared for the future, one where every voice counts and every community is part of the journey."
The progress results are based on the counting of around 85% of the returned votes.
Selwyn was always expecting sweeping changes, with seven councillors from last term not restanding, and one-term councillor Gliddon only running for the mayoralty.
At this stage, two councillors are poised to be re-elected.
Sophie McInnes (2,358 votes) is in line for a third term in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward, joined by Brendan "Big Red" Shefford (2,036) and Rhys Laraman (1,958).
In the Te Waihora Ellesmere Ward, incumbent Elizabeth Mundt holds a 314-vote lead over former councillor Murray Lemon.
The new at-large councillors are poised to be Tracey Macleod and Sam Wilshire.
Kā Puna Springs Ward is currently led by Aaron McGlinchy (5,439), Denise Carrick (4,107), and Zoran Rakovic (2,878), but Sarah Barnsly (2,840) and Karim Sabet (2,725) are in reach.
John Verry (2,078) has beaten out Sharn Nu'u (1,185) in the Tawera Malvern Ward.
