Maternity unit upgrade

Maternity unit upgrade

Ashburton Hospital's maternity unit is getting an upgrade which is expected to be complete by the end of 2026.

It's part of a two-year $100 million announcement made by the health minister Simeon Brown in September.

Health New Zealand Te Waipounamu Regional Head of Infrastructure Dr Rob Ojala said the work is to ensure it is fit for purpose and complies with current health and safety standards.

"The Ashburton facility provides antenatal assessments, labour and birth care, and postnatal stays.

"The upgrade will ensure the facility provides contemporary care and a refreshed and modern space for whānau, friends, and support networks."

The reconfiguration will include the conversion of four postnatal rooms at one end of the facility, centrally locating staff workspace for visibility, Improving the privacy of the antenatal clinic room, and adding a waiting area.

Dr Ojala would not say how much of the $100 million will go towards the maternity unit.

"Due to commercial sensitivity, we are unable to specify the cost of each individual project."

The upgrade of the Ashburton Community Maternity Unit is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Other South island hospitals will benefit from the funding boost including the design of a Radiation Oncology Unit at Christchurch's Burwood Hospital, and an emergency department expansion at Queenstown's Lakes District Hospital.
