St Joseph’s School students had an end-of-term surprise on Friday when Grant Hood Contracting delivered a truck load of snow from Mt Hutt.
Business operators Grant and Carolyn Hood had children at the school some years ago, and every year would bring snow for pupils to play in.
With a staff member who had children at the school this year, they decided they would make the delivery again for old time’s sake.
Pupils showed their appreciation by leaping into the cold white mound in the school grounds with glee.
Snowball fights quickly ensued, and as well as lots of shrieks, laughter and smiles, there were a few inevitable tears.
Acting principal Claire Corbett said the delivery had been particularly welcome after snow falling in Ashburton on Wednesday night.
Many students, and even teachers, had anticipated this would result in lots of snow on the ground the next day to play in, however, there had not been enough for this.
The last day of term had also been Loud Shirt Day, where children dressed up and brought along a donation to support the cause of funding cochlear implants for the hearing impaired.
