Falloon out; Bell standing again

Falloon out; Bell standing again
John Falloon and Thelma Bell.

John Falloon has announced he will not be standing for a second term on the Ashburton District Council.
Falloon is the fourth current councillor to announce their time will be up on election day in October.
After one term Falloon has opted to step aside and focus his attentions to maintaining an active accounting practice in Ashburton.
“After careful consideration I have decided to not seek re-election as a district councillor,” Falloon said.
“I have greatly enjoyed my time with fellow councillors and senior staff, but I that  feel the time is right to hand over to someone else.
“I wish the next council every success in driving better services at an affordable cost to the ratepayers they serve.”
Falloon received the second highest number of votes behind Leen Braam in the Ashburton Ward in 2019.
Former councillor Thelma Bell is back in the mix, along with newcomer Brie Burgess, taking the number of nominations for the Ashburton ward to seven for the four vacancies, with at least one more contender tipped to be joining the race.
Bell lost her seat after polling seventh in the Ashburton Ward in 2019 but three of the councillors ahead of her – Falloon, Angus McKay and Diane Rawlison have all announced they will not be standing.
Richie Owen is seeking a second term on the Methven Community Board.
He will be joining fellow board member Kelvin Holmes as the only nominations received so far.
With nominations closing at midday on Friday there is still a late run of nominations expected to come in.
