Excitement builds for awards

Excitement builds for awards

In the role of deputy mayor, Liz McMillan sees the huge amount of volunteer work that goes on in our community.

That's why she has decided to come on board as a judge for the new Ashburton Guardian Heart of Ashburton awards.

"So many people get recognition in their own groups, but we aren't always necessarily able to recognise them as a whole community," she says.

One of the key positives for her was that the awards were open to anyone from across the whole district, not just Ashburton itself.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing the nominations coming through."

Alongside the deputy mayor will be judges from the sponsors for each category.

Cartwrights Insurance and Mortgage Brokers is sponsoring the Lifetime Achievement award.

Financial advisor Rebecca New said Cartwrights acknowledged the importance of recognising the people who make our community a better place, and especially the people who have dedicated their entire lives to do so.

"This is our way of supporting our local community, which Cartwrights have been proud to be a part of since 1979."

The Braided Rivers Community Trust decided to come on board to sponsor the Volunteer of the Year award, because while the trust provides funding for groups and projects, it's volunteers who do the work.

"They are the real heroes in our community," trust chief executive Rob Reid says.

"Without them our funding wouldn’t achieve much. For that reason we are extremely proud to be able to celebrate these heroes and support Volunteer of the Year."

For Jeff Donaldson and PGG Wrightsons, backing the Rural Champion award was "crucial", as it acknowledges their integral role in sustaining the backbone of our society.

"Many individuals often contribute significantly to agriculture, ensuring a stable and secure food supply for communities all over New Zealand.

"By recognizing their efforts, we foster a sense of inclusivity and appreciation, bridging the gap between urban and rural communities and promoting a more interconnected and supportive society."

Rangitata's newly elected MP James Meager is sponsoring the Act of Kindness award.

"Honouring acts of kindness reinforces the beneficial effects that simple good deeds have on people and communities," he says.

"It fosters a sense of togetherness and connection by acting as a reminder that kindness is a basic component of our shared humanity. My hope is that we can encourage others to carry out similar charitable deeds, starting a chain reaction that builds a better Mid Canterbury."

The Ashburton Club & MSA is also on board as a sponsor, supporting the Sports Personality award.

And last but certainly not least is the Advance Ashburton Junior Achiever (under 19) award.

Executive officer Carolyn Clough says of all the causes supported by Advance Ashburton, one of their priorities is the education, health, and wellbeing of the young people of our Ashburton District.

"After all, our children are the future of this great community!

"The Heart of Ashburton Awards aligns with our goal to highlight the importance of young people to our district and to celebrate their achievements.

"We hope to encourage our community to get in behind our young people, to hear their voices, and to support their future development."

Nominations are open until December 3, and can be emailed to [email protected]
