Glitz and glam coming to Mt Somers
Young farmers will be swapping gumboots for ties and swaandris for heels at the Foothills Young Farmers Ball on December 6.
This year's event, held at the Mount Somers Hall, is set to sparkle with a Glitz and Glam theme.
"We are going for a 1920's Peaky Blinders vision.
"We have made it Glitz and Glam style, so it fits with the Ball," event organiser and Foothills Young Farmers member Jasmine Darragh says.
The event will feature music from the leading Christchurch covers band Smashbox.
"They play good party hits that everyone loves and a bit of country – pretty much everything you could dream of for a Young Farmers ball."
There will be a spit roast on the night so no one goes hungry, and courtesy bands ensure a safe ride home when festivities finish at midnight.
It's not all just for fun, though.
Each year, the event donates a portion of proceeds to Movember, an initiative that supports men's health.
There will be a moustache competition on the night, with prizes for Best Mo, Creepiest Mo, and Worst Mo for those whose moustache efforts are less than impressive.
"That's for guys that just can't gro mo's."
Those wishing to enter the moustache competition needed to be clean-shaven before having their photo taken at the Mount Somers Rugby Club Bark Up on November 2.
The club also donates to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust and a smaller local charity or group.
"In the past, we have donated to the Staveley Ice Rink, and last year, we donated to the Mount Somers School Pool."
There will be an auction on the night, and those who dress up could be rewarded with a prize.
"We are doing raffles and spot prizes on the night for best dressed and best on-theme, which which will go along with the moustache judging."
Tickets are $80, or $70 for Young Farmers Club members, and can be purchased on the Young Farmers Club website or via a link on the Foot Hills Young Farmers Club Facebook page.
