A young Ashburton man who fell asleep at the wheel and caused a head-on crash on State Highway One this year has been saved from crippling financial repercussions.
Victims of the crash were originally seeking $23,000 reparation and an insurance company $35,000 when 18-year-old Ronin James McIlroy appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week for sentence on three charges of careless driving causing injury.
Police reluctantly halved the reparation being sought, but Judge Allan Roberts said even that would be like getting blood from a stone.
