The Rolls Royce of tractors

The Rolls Royce of tractors

A one-of-a-kind tractor imported from the US in 1984 will be on display at the Wheat and Wheels Rally this weekend.

The Versatile 895 pivot steer tractor with 310 horsepower was imported by the West brothers, David and Roger, for their farm in Wakanui.

"It was the Rolls Royce of tractors" and cost about $180,000 - a large amount of cash compared to other options at the time, said current custodian Greg Donaldson.

While this type of tractor is still in daily use in Australia and very popular in the US, this is the only tractor of its kind in New Zealand.

Donaldson said the Wests sold the tractor to the late Peter Butterick after 9000 hours. The tractor worked Peter's land up until two years ago, doing another 6000 hours.

"It's a really reliable and robust tractor,"

Donaldson said it was an honour to look after the Versatile for Peter.

It was his pride and joy, even though he bought it second hand.

Donaldson said Peter bought a second Versatile tractor which would also be on display at the rally this weekend.

The old Versatile has had an upholstery and mechanical makeover. it is now retired and lives in a shed, other than appearances at shows.

The Wheat and Wheels Rally will showcase hundreds of tractors, steam engines, farm machinery, fire engines and classic and vintage cars and trucks at 377 Lauriston Barrhill Road.

The rally will include a bouncy castle for kids, food and craft stalls, a military display, and events running in the main ring from 10am - 3.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
