For the past four weeks, Year 7 students at Ashburton Intermediate have been swapping their studies for shimmying, and classwork for shape-cutting.

An initiative called ditch the desks and dance has quickly earned popularity among students and teachers, and came to an epic conclusion on Wednesday afternoon.

With the help of Anna Raukawa and Madi Wilson from Life Dance Academy, classes learnt and perfected dance routines, then worked to put their own personal spin on them.

Wednesday afternoon saw all classes going head-to-head in a dance-off, complete with funky costumes and signage, held at the school hall and attended by an enthusiastic crowd.

Room 7/4 or “the black hats”, led by teacher Kristina Shepherd, eventually took out first place.

She thought it was likely thanks to a move where one student was picked up and flown like an aeroplane to the lyrics “feeling so fly”.

“The classes were all fantastic though,” she said.

Shepherd said the school were hugely grateful to Anna and Madi for giving up their time and helping.

“Bring on next year!”
